Ruïne of the old Matthiaskerk
Very impressive to see are the old 17th century tombs within the old wall remains.
On this beautiful and quiet spot is the beautiful ruin of the 17th century old Matthias church and next to it the beautiful Old Church Tower from the 15th century.
In the 13th century there was already a church here, but in 1573, during the 80 years war, the Leiden residents destroyed the church as a precaution that the Spanish troops were accommodated there. The church was rebuilt around 1700 and in 1874 the church was reduced to a ruin.
This special ruin is somewhat hidden next to the hiking park of the Oostergeest estate. You can easily combine the walk in the hiking park with a visit to the ruin.
